Record Entries in the 2010 Club Marine Southern 80!
Posted on | January 13, 2010 | 53 Comments
The 2009 event saw many records broken; including the number of entries, but the 2010 Club Marine Southern 80 is tipping to eclipse this, with 614 entries received and accepted.
WOW what an exciting event, it is going to be! – Ninety percent of the competitors travel from every state in Australia to the towns of Echuca / Moama for the event on the 12th, 13th & 14th February 2010.
Competitors are also travelling from New Zealand, Belgium and the United Kingdom to ski the mighty Murray River The action starts on Friday morning (12th February 2010) with the Cantech Engineering Breakfast with the stars, at a new venue: the Moama Soundshell , Cobb Highway Moama (just over the bridge). Scrutineering & Competitor Briefing is the at the MWSC (Moama Water Sports Club) office, Annesley st Echuca from 12 noon to 5pm.
The Quest Apartments Launch Night is at the Corporate Area at the Victoria Park Boat Ramp from7.30pm to 12 midnight. Tickets for this event can be purchased from the MWSC office.
Saturday and the action starts.
The Total Tools, Static Display occurs in Hare st between Pakenham & Anstruther streets. This starts at 9am to 12 noon and is another opportunity to get close to the boats and see all horsepower they have, along with their magnificent paint work.
Whilst the Total Tools, static display is occurring, the social classes are on the water.
Starting at Torrumbarry they travel to the 80kms to the Victoria Park Boat ramp. The river is closed for exclusive use for the weekend, so no other boats are permitted on the water between Torrumbarry Weir and the Victoria Park Boat Ramp. The 100 social boats leaving at one minute apart will travel the whole course.
In the afternoon the start line moves to the Five Mile reserve just out of Moama. Here the shorter course competitors start.
These classes include the Veterans, Tadpoles (the youngest is Carter Robertson who is 8), Senior Social, Disabled, 70mph social & 60mph social. The last boats to close the racing for the day will be the Bakers Blitz and President’s Invitational who make up the top 40 boats. These boats will be racing for their pole positions for the racing on Sunday. During the breaks in racing, whilst the course is being cleared, on water entertainment will be provided at the Victoria Park compound. This includes the VWSA ski show and some Sprint boats, all provided by McDonalds Echuca.
The Victoria Park area is the best place to watch all the action, with full catering available and trade sites to visit and the big screen to watch. Entry to the area is $30 for a weekend pass and $20 for a day pass. Children under 13 are free.
Sunday racing starts with classes 14-20 starting off at 8.30am. Around 110 boats will travel the whole course; these boats are leaving at 30 seconds apart. Around 12 noon, the ‘big guns’ will leave from Torrumbarry.
Super class will leave in the order they finished, followed by the remaining 200 boats, including the 25 boats from the Presidents Invitational, which will leave in the order that they finished from Saturday. Once all the boats have been accounted for, then presentation will occur at the Victoria Park compound.
Results from the weekend will be “twittered” on the Southern 80 Twitter page http://twitter.com/southern80 as boats cross the line.
Full final results will be available from the Southern 80 web page at the conclusion of presentations.

January 20th, 2010 @ 10:31 am
I cant see LK22 going all the way as he will have way to many distractions and restrictions with the new love interest in tow. I think the rolling stones song goes something like ” under my thumb”.

good one geoffrey just know when risa comes on to that ipod shits getting serious haha
February 3rd, 2010 @ 11:33 am
im backing whippet 100% the wild man robbo won outright last year…
February 4th, 2010 @ 10:15 am
Knowing the Wild Man of Ski Racing like i do, he wont put up with LK22 and his harem of women. You gotta understand boys when ya head down to the creek and hop on the deck of the AXEN it’s game on from the get go. I think the whip dog has got to much on his mind this year to have a real crack. Maybe in a couple of years he’ll be a contender once he’s sewn all those wild oats of his.
February 4th, 2010 @ 10:25 am
haha well see mike well see gotta get past the first few bends
February 4th, 2010 @ 11:36 am
mike mate you make yourself sound like a chopper!lukes skiing unreal and would have to be a top conteneder for a good placeing in the ulimited feild..

February 8th, 2010 @ 8:08 am
im backing kurt brooks for outright this year.. both days
February 8th, 2010 @ 11:09 am
I would love to see someone other than Hellrazor, Stinga or NGR win the 80 – just not sure if any TEAM has enough class. I am backing the syndicate to take the blitz down and cant pick it for sunday. Wish I was there. Good luck to all and lets see some records fall
February 8th, 2010 @ 11:28 am
Kurt Brooks definately good enough for the outright win, 1st european sthn 80 winner, and before anyone is quick to remind me i am aware that chris Thorne from Great Britain won the blitz behind “gotta be crazy” back in the early 90′s.
February 8th, 2010 @ 11:53 am
gotta be crazy back out of the shed this year… dunno whether they will be on the pace though
February 8th, 2010 @ 12:28 pm
Dont hold your breath ‘Harbourmaster’, all ive been hearing is that us Europeans cant ski in the flat . . . .
with you on the pedals of that Connelly this year, racing lines will be like a dream round dead-mans, your defiantly in it for a outright if not the race record
February 8th, 2010 @ 1:23 pm
I Agree with Mr. Pants & Harbourmaster, Kurt Brooks has been skiing like a gun over here in aus. I watched from Kurt ski behind “Superman” at Aussie Titles and let me tell you, you has got the ability to win this years Southern 80.
Hopefully Kurt will be the first pommy to feature on a Southern 80 tee.
Go KB !
February 8th, 2010 @ 2:10 pm
Go for it Kurt!
February 8th, 2010 @ 4:28 pm
Get your Face on that T Shirt Kurt, You can do it. Good Luck Team Symthetic….
February 9th, 2010 @ 5:37 am
who is kurt skiing with ???
February 9th, 2010 @ 6:20 am
SYNTHETIC , not sure if that will win outright…..
February 9th, 2010 @ 9:54 am
ha ha KB
my mouth does not make me prove myself, my trophy cabinet does it for me.
see you down there Brooksy, all seriousness your bro took an outright place 9 years ago would be great to emulate that achievment.
February 9th, 2010 @ 10:03 am
im backing the racecrafts at the 80 this year! Syndicate and Argo TOP 2 in any order!!!
February 9th, 2010 @ 10:14 am
agree’d
February 9th, 2010 @ 10:56 am
Nothing like keeping it in the family Brooksy

February 11th, 2010 @ 8:46 am
