Pre-Race Press Release

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. USA – Water ski racing returns to Thompson Bay on the weekend of Feb. 16-17 with the National Water Ski Racing Association (NWSRA) debuting a new racing format and several new racing divisions. The season-opening races for the NWSRA, sponsored by local manufacturer Nordic Boats, begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Race Flyer

For the first time, this year’s event will feature combined short sprint races along with marathon races. The sprint races last approximately 10 minutes and the marathon races will run between 20 and 45 minutes. Along with the new racing format, new classes are being added focusing on entry level and “fun” racing. New classes include: F3, in which the boat’s power will be limited to a 160-horsepower outboard; and a 60 mph class, where the average speed cannot exceed 60 mph during the race.

Age classes are always a great crowd pleaser. Fans will see young boys and girls as well as moms and dads competing. Of the teams that will be participating throughout the weekend, more than half are comprised of family members. Teams consist of a driver, observer and skier. Participants from Arizona and California comprise most of the field.
Admission is free and spectators are welcome. The best places for viewing will be from the beach at the Nautical Inn Resort or from your boat on the water. The pits will be located at the Nautical Inn and will be open to the public.

The National Water Ski Racing Association is one of nine sport disciplines of USA Water Ski, which was formed in 1939 as a non-profit organization promoting water skiing in the United States. USA Water Ski is affiliated with the International Water Ski Federation (world governing body) and is recognized by the United States Olympic Committee and Pan-American Sports Organization as the national governing body of organized water skiing in the United States. With more than 30,000 members, USA Water Ski is the largest water ski federation in the world.
