Racer of the Fortnight – Steven Morley

Steven Morley

Steven started in the sport of water ski racing as a youngster in late 1980’s with his father Colin and Mum Carol, as they travelled with the ski racing scene. Over the years he has competed in most events in Australia and few overseas.

A bit about Steven

Steven is a Car Dealer, in Echuca, Victoria, Australia. He is married to Serena and a proud father of Jack 4, Ruby 2 & Milly 6 months.
In the river races, Steven partners James Buser and they ski behind Top Gun with Russell Lewis doing the driving, and with Chris Gelle in the observer’s seat. They compete in Superclass.
In the lake circuits, Steven competes in many events such as his age events (Senior Men’s, Open Men) F2 and this season has had a go at Social Men’s, but “it is scary shit skiing on those small skis”.

Ski Racing Career

Steven started skiing in 1986-87 season. His first Southern 80 was skiing behind Azatak with Harley Nicholls and Andrew Hunt in the boat and skiing with Scott Clever. In 1988 again fronting up for the 80 but this time behind Too Low 4 Zero with Dad, Colin driving and with Darcy Duggan observing whilst skiing with Justin Cadden, again in the Under 13 class.
Teaming up with the Thundernuts crew in 1991– Michael Dominguez, Eugene Bonollo and skier Brett Dominguez, saw the start of a lifetime friendship between the Morley & Dominguez families that is still very strong today.
A highlight in the early years of racing was winning the 1992 Southern 80 as a 16 year old, competing in the 16-19 Boys class in a time of 33:34, with the Thundernuts crew.
1991 /92 season, saw the Thundernuts crew win the Southern 80 and the Mildura 100 and the title of the King of the Murray.
Over the years, as Steven progressed through the different age classes from Under 13’s to Seniors where he skis now, there were trophies for winning point score series, Victorian and South Australian state titles along the journey.
Racing along Steven in those days was his mate, Brett Dominguez. There was a rivalry between them, which saw close racing on the water, pushing each other to develop their skiing ability further, but when it came time for the rivers – they put that aside and skied together. Off the water they were and are best mates. There were many bunny hop competitons along the way – some of which you can see on the Skirace.net Bunnies page.

In 1997 after a ski racing injury, Steven retired from the sport of water ski racing for a while. The 2001 / 02 season, saw Steven lured back to the sport to observe for the Blown Budget / Thundernuts crew. His invaluable experience on the water helped him to be an excellent observer, always looking out for the skier.

Michael & Brett Dominguez encouraged Steven back onto the water in 2002, to ski with the Blown Budget crew. This time Tim Dominguez was in the boat and with Brett & Steven skiing there was a determination in the team to win the Southern 80 yet again. This was achieved in 2003 in a time of 31:42 ( a bit faster than the 1992 time, they played it smarter!). This was probably the most memorable moment for Steven. The 1992 win, although a joy, Steven was too young to really appreciate the win.

Influences on Steven’s Ski Racing Career

Wayne Duggan: “ I spent a lot of time with Wayne as I was growing up, I listened to him”
Gavin Arnott: “ I mimicked his style and admired his skiing”
Michael Dominguez:” He worked hard to make things happen, whether it was driving all night to a ski race, doing engine development / practice on the Saturday. Then racing Sunday and to then turn around to go back home for work on Monday. Michael was a quiet achiever and a gentleman.”

The Southern 80 is Steven’s favourite race for a number of things. It is in his home town – Echuca. He has won it outright twice. There are challenges for the whole team in the event.
Steven said “ I have more of a appreciation of the Bridge to Bridge as I have got older, compared to when I was younger. It is a race of tactics and starting 10 wide is a challenge in itself. When I was younger I would ski as hard as I could for a long as I could, but now I am more aware of tactics and utilising my knowledge of the event to ski to my best.”

Training and Preparing for an event

Getting as much time on the water is an ideal way to prepare for an event. This year it has been somewhat of a challenge, as the Murray River in Echuca, has been in flood or had black water for most of the season. So trips with the family to Melbourne and Geelong to ski on the bay have been made over the season. Gym work about three times a week is also a vital part of Steven’s routine prior to an event.

Advice to younger or new competitors?

Utilise the 7 P’s and lots of preparation are very important.
Communication with your observer is vital, this extends to on land and on water. Your observer should know your style of skiing, your limits and strengths. They are a vital part of the team, as they are the communication point between the skiers and the driver.
If possible stay with one observer, they get to know your strengths and weaknesses better than you, and they know when to push you – they are the vital communicator in the team.

Supporters and Sponsors

Family is vital – Serena, Jack, Ruby & Milly
His sponsors are MAG, Harp of Erin, and Top Gun Ski Racing

Almost 13,000 Visits Last Week Thanks to Julie, Karen & Wade’s Help

Thanks to Julie Golledge, Karen Brooks & Wade Bennett, Skirace.net has started the year stronger than ever with viewing figures on the up as shown below. You can also see the counter at the top left of the site, slowly approaching one million visits since July 2008.

George Faust passes away.

It is with sadness that we inform you that George Faust passed away earlier today.

George and his family have been involved in ski racing from the early days and he will be sadly missed.

The Funeral will be in Qld and George’s son Glenn will pass details on as they come to hand.

Skirace.net Continues

Just before the New Year I announced that I would no longer run Skirace.net because of the time it required. Since then, I’ve received dozens of messages from people who were disappointed, and from people who offered to help keep the site going, and I appreciate all of these.

Skirace.net Ends After 14 Years Online

After 14 years of publishing water ski racing news online, I’ve decided to call it a day and so I won’t be publishing any more news & updates. It’ll free up some of my time for other things.

The Club Marine Southern 80 voted as 4th most popular event in Australia

*** AUSTRALIA’S TOP TEN FAVOURITE EVENTS ANNOUNCED ***

Australia’s Favourite Event for 2010 is Jessica Watson’s Homecoming staged on Sydney Harbour on 15 May 2010.

Coming in a fantastic 4th place, was the 2010 Club Marine Southern 80 !

This shows the huge following behind the World’s biggest water ski race from people Australia wide and cements it’s place as one of the premier extreme sporting events in the country.
It beat some really major events in Australia in the last year. Hopefully that can be transferred to even more support & sponsorship for the sport in Australia.

The Moama Water Sports Club and it’s hard working members should be congratulated on running and successfully evolving an event of it’s size over the years, and major sponsors like Club Marine and Tip Top Bakeries thanked and supported for their involvement by the ski racing community.

Over 60,000 votes were recorded in the first search for Australia’s Favourite Event, which closed at 9pm Thursday night just minutes before the winner was announced at The Australian Event Awards in Sydney.

Over 1200 competitors arrive in Echuca / Moama for the biggest water ski race in the world

The 2010 Club Marine Southern 80 starts on Friday 12th February , 7am to 9am, with the Cantech Breakfast with the Stars. Here you can mingle with; current and former world champions, skier’s of the future and view the awesome boats.
330 boats have entered the event with the majority of them from Victoria, with NSW following close behind.
Over 1200 competitors are competing in the event as either a driver, observer or skier. They are travelling from all around the world and Australia to participate in this great event. We have 7 current and former world champions competing. Including the current World Junior Champions; Yolien Bormans (Belgium) and Jack Houston (Australia).
The 60 mph class is still proving to be very popular with 45 entries in the expert race and 41 entries in the social class.
The oldest driver is Doug Kennedy the driver of Sharp As, whilst the oldest male and female skiers are husband and wife team of Nessie & Roger Hicks from Queensland – they are skiing together in the Veterans class.
Carter Robertson is skiing in Tadpoles and is the youngest skier.
The sport of water ski racing is essentially a family sport and the teams of Argo and Money Muncher epitomise this with their whole team from the one family.
In Open Women Social – it will be interesting to be in the boat of Tantrum. The husband’s are in the boat – Dale Linaker and Christian Apps, whilst the wives are out the back skiing Jenny Linaker and Justine Apps.
The race action starts on the water on Saturday morning at 8.30am with the social classes on the water. These teams are competing on the whole course from Torrumbarry Weir to Victoria Park Boat Ramp.
The best place to capture all the action is at the Victoria Park Boat Ramp, where the boats finish. There is the McDonalds Entertainment on the water including the VWSA Ski Show and the some Jet sprint boats; during breaks in the racing. There are also trade displays and activities for the children such as jump castle, face painting etc. The area is fully catered with a range of foods and drinks available. Admission is free for children under 13, a day pass is $20 and a weekend pass is $30.
The ‘big boys’ the Superclass boats will be on the water at around 3pm on Saturday as they compete in the Tip Top Bakeries Bakers Blitz. There are 15 boats in Superclass; Blazen, Hellrazor, Stinga, Burnin, The Mistress, Fastcash, Merc Force, Argo, Superman, Top Gun, Omen Racing, Gassa, The B, The Gun,The Syndicate.

These boats are the top boats and crews in Australia. Due to the Black Saturday bushfires last year, the event was cancelled before these boats could race for the outright winner & the winner of Super class. So they are keen to take the outright trophy this year. Five of the Super class boats come from Victoria, six of them from New South Wales and Four from Queensland. For these teams and others – the race is a drivers race and the most challenging aspect of the event according to Mark Cranny, a four time winner of the event is the ”123 bends in the river”.
Blazen won the Tip Top Bakeries Bakers Blitz last year, so they will lead the field onto the water. This season has seen a number of boats take out the outright placing in the classic ski race events. Superman won the Hawkesbury 120, Stinga won the Grafton Bridge to Bridge & the Sydney Bridge to Bridge, whilst Blazen won the Berri 110.
The Hellrazor and Stinga teams are the only ones which have won the event outright before. Can Hellrazor make it a record 5 outright wins, or will another team step up to the podium.
Catch all the action on the water at the Victoria Park boat Ramp, Echuca on Saturday 13th Feb and Sunday 14th February. Race programs are now available in the Echuca /Moama newsagents for $10
For further information regarding the event you can visit www.southern80.com.au or contact the Moama Water Sports Club on 03 54806754
