HELLRAZOR WINS THE 2012 HI-TEC OILS HAWKESBURY 120 WATER SKI RACE. The first race of the 2012-2013 Super Series’ was an action packed success, with close racing in all classes all weekend and lots of record times absolutely obliterated. The Sydney Sun gods were smiling, rewarding competitors with smoother water and low winds. The race program introduced a few different skiers & boat combinations for this season, as well as some brand spanking new boats, never seen raced before. As such the gossip on the bank was running in overdrive. Who would it be that takes it out ? The Sackville Shootout, a 33km race for Sunday’s pole positions, from Sackville to Windsor, was a race that came down to a 1 second gap over the finish line between last year’s winner Superman and Queensland’s Blazen towing current F2 World Champion Grant Turner and Nth Qld’s Mark Weaver. 2012 Hi-Tec Oils Hawkesbury 120 Entries Closing Friday 10th August
The 2012 Hi-Tec Oils Hawkesbury 120 Ski Race, held from the 24th-26th August, looks to be a spectacular start to the 2012-2013 Super Series. The race is an exciting prelude to the new season, with a lot of new boats and crew set-ups set to go hard in the longest 2 up ski race in the world. Major sponsors Hi-Tec Oils continue their support of Ski Racing NSW, sponsoring the H120 event and we must thank them for their ongoing support. Last year’s winner Superman, towing Daniel Graziano and Daniel Campbell, took out the Sackville Sprint, Super Class and the race outright last year in a super quick time of 43:10mins. In doing that it joined Stinga as the only other 2 time winner of the event. Jason Walmsley, Chris Gelle, Daniel Campbell and Daniel Graziano are all gunning to become the first skiers to win the race outright three times. Stinga’s record from 2010 of 41:25mins is up for grabs and could quite possibly be taken out by the F21 Force Stinga in the Unlimited Inboard division, towing Ben Hackett and Jack Houston. It is with great sadness to hear that Ken Vaughan has lost his battle with cancer and has passed away the morning of August 3rd. Ken was Race Director of the most famous ski race in the world The Catalina as well as raising funds and organising events for the Catalina Ski Race Children’s Charity Ken was the most generous & helpful person you could meet nothing was to much trouble his parting will be a great loss to the organisation of The Greatest Ski Race in the World ” Catalina”. My name is Ken Durham, and I was (am) a member of the Undefeated 1974 Cal State Long Beach Varsity Rowing Team. We are preparing for a major reunion, and have been trying to get in touch with all of our team-mates. However, we are having trouble locating Don Henderson, who at the time also was a distinguished water ski competitor with the NWSRA in Southern California. Urgent Message re Cardiff Race Docks Access: Because of security concerns with the Port Authority, we have had to change the entrance that we are using to access the venue. The post code for this entrance is CF10 4LY. The best approach is exit 33 M4. Follow the dual carriage way approx 8 miles until you pass under a short tunnel and arrive at a roundabout. Take the 2nd exit (this is nearly back on… yourself) and travel 200m to a T Junction. Turn Left at the T. Be careful after a in few meters the road splits. After doing a terrific job, Derek Blackmore has stepped down as British Water Ski Racing Team Captain. Derek has been racing and contributing to our sport for decades and given a lot, and he will continue to do so as he now focuses more on his role as an International judge. Stepping up to the mark to take on the role of British Water Ski Racing Team Captain is a very proud and capable Karen Brooks who needs little introduction to British, European or world water ski racing circles. Karen said; “having been involved in water ski racing for over 35 years, I am delighted and honoured to represent Team GB on the international water si racing circuit”. Karen was one of my 1st competitors in the 70’s when we were 12 year old skiers battling it out in races at Penarth Water Ski Club. Mike Bemis Passes Away
Ski racing has lost one of its great characters, namely Mike Bemis from the USA. On 23rd Septemeber 2008 skirace.net reported on Mike Bemis’s condition Sadly 3.5 years later we are reporting that on Saturday 21st April 2012 Mike Bemis passed away. Mike was a US National Champion on multiple occasions. He was a lively presence on the beach and along with his skis, binding, handles, rope, tape and other accessories, will be missed by many. Mike was a long-time member of the Lake Arrowhead Water Ski Club, a former World Speed Barefoot Record Holder, and was a fixture of US Ski Racing manufacturing his own racing, training, and fun ski’s. He was also part of an episode of the TV Show “Baywatch” back in 1990 where they did an episode on the “Avalon Ski Race”, a re-creation of the Catalina Ski Race. He will be greatly missed. Sunday the 27th May 2012 heralds the 76th running of the Bridge to Bridge Power Boat Race on the picturesque Hawkesbury River. The Upper Hawkesbury Power Boat Club will again host the historic Power Boat event and have asked Ski Racing NSW to be a part of the event by holding the Ski Racing NSW 1 Up Bridge Ski Race. This year we have been limited to a total of 120 ski race boats. Although we are limited to 120 starters all SRA members not running the ski race are invited to run the Power Boat Race with the UHPBC. The UHPBC will issue a day licence for all SRA members who wish to run their boat up the river and this can be done with or without an observer. Unfortunately we are not able to include skiers from the Under 10’s classes in any class of racing for this event. As in previous years the Ski Racing will commence once the power boats have completed their event, with a proposed start time somewhere around 11am at Brooklyn . At last week’s NSW committee meeting the following amendments were made: Bridge to Bridge 1up – Change of Date Due to a predicted king tide on the Hawkesbury during the week leading up to the 1up Bridge, SRA has removed the sanction for 6 May.
