Aussie Harry Luther aka “Canguro” – skied from Morocco to Italy

Posted by on 20 Feb 2012 in Australia | 0 comments

The Aussie world record holder for marathon water skiing is Harry Luther or “Canguro”, who skied over 5,000 km from Morocco to Italy in the 1970s. Written by Rochelle Williams ‘Canguro’ was the nickname given to Harry Luther by the Italian people in the 70s. It translates to Kangaroo, a fitting title for the world’s top marathon water-skier and professional cyclist. He lived a life of complete dedication to his sport and his passions, born with an internal desire to be the best in all his ventures, eventually leading to his death in 1987 after crashing in the final stretch of a cycling road race in Perth, Australia. His most significant achievement was when he waterskied from Tangiers in North Africa via the coasts of Spain, France and Monaco arriving in Cervia on the east coast of Italy. A distance of 5,010 kilometres, taking 10 days 5 hours and 36 minutes to complete, covering an average of 482km per day. To get to know Harry, a man that lived a life beyond expectations and without fear, his grandson Alex Luther will now follow in his footsteps and complete the same epic water-skiing feat. Alex said, “I hope by facing the...

2012 Harbour Master Tribute – Stephen Robertson We Salute You

Posted by on 25 Jan 2012 in Australia | 0 comments

Shots from the 2012 Harbour Master Tribute – “Stephen Robertson We Salute You”   Harbour Master Tribute 2012 Saturday January 21st, 2012 was a day that all of Ski Racing had an opportunity to pay homage to Stephen Robertson, WC9901, The Harbour Master. At 8am, in Stephen’s backyard, 31 boats and skiers congregated off North Head to follow a path up the coast to Lion Island. And back. That exact 50 mile journey is the training choice for many of the Robertson family. After completing the course, there are many of us who now understand that skiing in the unforgiving ocean, is one of the ingredients that makes the Robertson Family the mentally rich family that they are. A robust mental state of mind is but one ingredient to make a champion like Stephen Robertson. Without world class ability, mental strength would deliver only part of the result. Regularly skiing behind a single engine outboard, on a short ski, up or down the NSW coast, is what developed Stephen into the mentally historic and champion skier we remember him as. On a couple of occasions previously, Stephen invited those who rated themselves, to make the run with him. The very...

Posted by on 13 Dec 2011 in Australia, In Memory of | 0 comments

A special Training Tribute to Stephen Robertson will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2012. It will be run from 7:30am until 10:30am on Sydney Harbour. Sydney Harbour and beyond is the training choice for Stephen Robertson, AKA – Harbourmaster AKA – WC9901. As a tribute to a legend and a friend, we would like to invite you to take part in a nostalgic tribute ski from Sydney Harbour, around Lion Island and back into Sydney Harbour. We invite anyone capable and keen, to make the run up the coast. We will be following the same path travelled “more times that you’ve had hot dinners” by Stephen himself. This is NOT a race. Its a tribute to someone who offered our sport so much, and we make this journey as sign of respect in memory of Stephen Robertson. You all know the score…. No drag ski’s (74 INCH MAX). ‘The Beast’ takes the Rollo’s Marine Yamaha N.Z. Bridge to Bridge Title

Posted by on 10 Dec 2011 in Australia, New Zealand, Various Articles | 0 comments

The 28th running of the Rollo’s Marine Yamaha Bridge to Bridge Water Ski Classic was again a fantastic and popular event in 2011. The country’s best Water ski racers, powerboaters, jetskiers and Thundercats gathered in Hamilton for the annual event. There was also a good contingent of Australian’s out to offer strong competition. The weekend was full of drama with 3 out of the top 8 boats in the main race on Sunday with drawing after Saturdays race day. It all started on Saturday morning with the Waikato Security Novice and Masters race from Hamilton to Taupiri return. The competitors in the Masters class were competing for the Tony van Deursen Memorial Cup. Tony was tragically killed in a ski racing accident just 5 weeks prior to the Bridge to Bridge and he was a well respected and popular man. This mean that everyone wanted to win it and win it for Tony. Warlord did an impressively quick first leg time down to Taupiri with Kevin Vahtrik of Australia on the back. They looked as though they would take it out with ease in a new record time but blew one of the engines in the return leg just...

Ski and Boot Maintenance

Posted by on 5 Dec 2011 in Racing tips | 0 comments

Danny Cropper of DC Waterskis writes;  Boots Your boots are very easy to keep in good order and you need to do a handful of different things to make sure they stay comfortable and safe for you. 1- Good quality tape. Crappy tape will tend to stay in your boots instead of on your feet. 2- Reduced bio-degradable soap – this will be flushed out of your boots easier than full strength detergent and is much safer because your foot won’t slip out down the first straight from soap being still in there. 3- Rinse the salt, sand and all other crap out of your boots when you’re finished racing. Because come to the next race, if it’s still in there, anything could go wrong. 4- Check all screws, nuts and clips… sometimes they can crack, rust and come loose. 5- Some rubber protectant (Armoural)…DON’T spray it on your ski! Spray it into a cloth and wipe it all over the boots and make them clean & shiny. Skis This piece of art cops a lot of damage. You can minimize this in so many ways and again by doing these things you can keep it safe for you...

Ten things you may not think about till it’s too late

Posted by on 28 Nov 2011 in Racing tips | 0 comments

Danny Cropper of DC Waterskis writes; Ten thing you may not think about till it’s too late   1. Clean goggles – make sure your goggles are clean, that you leave them in your helmet to be safe where no one can put their grubby fingers on them! 2. 500mls of water – this is usually enough to take the edge off thirst and a dry mouth (sometimes caused from nerves and adrenaline) when you are sitting on the front or side of the boat going to or waiting to start that big race. 3. Soap for your boots – if you have to, get a little bottle (100mls) and fill it with about 20mls of bio-degradable detergent and the rest with water. This mix will tend to clear out of your boots very quickly and be plenty to help get your boots on. 4. Have you thought about how long your rope should be? What to consider: -weather -water conditions -course -speeds Before making the final decision about rope length, everything should be taken into consideration, adjust the rope, taped up, bagged up or put in a basket ready for the race start. 5. Chest straps on your wet...

Mary McMillan Will Ski in the 50th Bridge to Bridge

Posted by on 19 Oct 2011 in Australia | 0 comments

David McMillan has today announced the tremendous news that his 80yr old grandmother Mary will now compete in the 50th Bridge to Bridge Water Ski Race in NSW Australia. David wrote: I would like to advise that due to the efforts of the Bridge to Bridge’s major sponsor Nick Feros from Feros Group of Hotels and Cliff Priest, Mary and myself attended a meeting at 5.00pm yesterday at the NSW Water Ski Federation with Meryl Lee and Jan Thurgar who represent the Federation. This meeting was instigated by Nick and Cliff in an attempt to work together to find a solution to allow Mary to ski. I confirm that many issues were discussed at great length, but in the end I am happy to say that Mary will be allowed to ski in the Bridge subject to signing an “Agreement” with conditions, the main one being that we will start in the last grid of the first group and will only be allowed to travel up the River till a certain time or designated point, then we will pull over and wait for the Super Class Boats to come through. Mary McMillan (80yrs) and her 50th Bridge to Bridge

Posted by on 13 Oct 2011 in Australia | 0 comments

Australia’s Mary McMillan is renowned throughout the world of water ski racing for an incredible history in the sport. She has skied all 49 Bridge to Bridge water ski races since 1961, she is now 80 yrs of age and had planned to ski the 50th Bridge to Bridge in November. Anyone in ski racing, or in any other sport, in any country around the world, will appreciate how special this moment would be for the sport, for the event and for the woman who has done so much for so long in water ski racing. Unfortunately, the NSW Water Ski Federation in Australia have made an attempt to stop this important occasion from happening in water ski racing, and instead of focusing on the wonderful achievement that could take place by a woman so passionate about the sport, and using this to promote the sport and the event, the committee has chosen to focus upon a negative issue and made an attempt to stop Mary from skiing the Bridge. This has subsequently created uproar in the world of water ski racing which has been voiced across the social media. In the interests of the sport, I respectfully suggest that the...
