International Water Ski Racing Online Since 1996

34 Years Ago – The 1st Worlds Video

Louis Newbury-Smith uploaded 14 minutes of video footage of the 1st ever world championships which took place in 1979. This a superb look back at water ski racing history – 34 years before the forthcoming 2013 World Championships in Tenerife.

There were three venues and it’s the Round at Welsh Harp that is covered. You can watch skiers racing hands in front and wrapped in this unique event. Interviews with Malcolm Coe, Wayne Ritchie, Bronwyn Wing (nee Wright) and more.

I remember it well as me, Martin and Karen Brooks and a bunch of others were youngsters watching this ground-breaking event take place. The likes of Tom Lumley was out there racing with the Coes and Carl Johnson was in top form too. Who else from that event is still competing? Add your answers and other comments below.

More videos will follow soon, including the 1983 & 1985 worlds, thanks to Louis Newbury-Smith.
