Mawer Wins Cairns Ski Racing Club Esplanade Series Race

The Cairns Post reports: Reigning world formula one ski racing champion Wayne Mawer dominated the premier division during the first race of the Cairns Ski Racing Club Esplanade series yesterday.

Mawer, racing behind Juggernaut, won both races of the premier division, finishing in front of Glen Hannan (The One), Justin Greenwood (TWR) and Stewart Tobin (Hustler).

Racing conditions were tough, especially in the first race, when a strong wind and choppy swell conspired to undo competitors.

Mawer said it was not the type of conditions ski racers associated with Cairns. “For an event that’s supposed to be calm water it was definitely very difficult,” he said.  “It was good, though, because a lot of us hadn’t experienced those types of conditions before. “It was almost a case of surviving a lap to race a lap. You might have to back off a bit, get your bearings and then hit it again.”

Mawer said it was always enjoyable competing in Cairns. “It’s good that you don’t have to travel far and that you’re racing your mates and supporting the local club at the same time,” he said.

The day’s other race featured a mix of B grade men, junior and women racers. Mathew Ducie (The One) finished in front of Leah Haslam (Hustler), with Serena Kruse (TWR) running third.

The next race in the Esplanade series is on February 28.
