New Zealand to Host the World Water Ski Racing Championships again in 2015

23 Apr 2014

New Zealand has been announced as the Country to Host the World Water Ski Racing Championships in 2015.

The New Zealand Water Ski Racing Association is proud and very excited to announce that New Zealand will be the host country for the 2015 World Water Ski Racing Championships. Wellington will be the host city for next year’s champs that will be held from April 8th – 19th 2015. This is the second time that New Zealand has ever hosted the world titles after a very successful event was held in Rotorua and Taupo in 2007.

The World Champs will bring together the worlds’ best ski racers to compete for 6 titles including Men’s Formula 1 and 2, Women’s Formula 1 and 2 and Junior (Under 17) Boys and Girls. Teams and their boats are expected from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, France, Spain and USA. Skiers will create quite a spectacle and are expected to reach speeds in excess of 160KPH on the Wellington harbour courses based around Oriental and Evan’s Bays.

The teams will compete in 4 rounds over the course of a week, with a day on, day off schedule and the competitors having their 3 best results count towards the world titles. The Junior skiers ski for 30 minutes plus one lap with the Women for 45 minutes and the Men for 1 hour respectively.

The last worlds were held in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain in September 2013 and were dominated by Australia. New Zealand picked up a Silver and 5th from Mitchell Horan and Natalia Flexman respectively who competed in the Junior categories. Both Horan and Flexman along with many others hope to be selected again to represent their country in front of home nation support along with a much larger New Zealand Team.

Both the Event and the New Zealand Team are in need of Sponsorship and should you wish to be involved in any way please email bevan.scott@gmail.com or call Bevan on 027 667 9858 Our website www.skirace.co.nz and facebook page will be the main source for updates and event information.
