Cyclones Galore Gather for Cairns Ski Racing

Due to the threat of Cyclone Hamish that was of Cairns on Saturday the 7th the Ski race that was to be held was called of – reports Neville Fry of Cairns. He went onto say; But in try Cairns style the Skiers still wanted to have a training run. So we had a ski race when you do not have a ski race.

The water conditions where perfect except for a head on 1.2 meter swell of the Cyclone. This brought a few of the boats undone. The race was won by Anthony Greenwood behind his brothers Cyclone (what do you expect when you are skiing in a Cyclone) Hustler and second was Dimitri Bertels skiing behind Peter Sanders boat a Millennium another Cairns built boat. Dimi’s boat was the slowest in the field but when you have a fearless crew and skier you never know what will happen.

On Sunday there was a ski race on the Esplanade in Cairns

The weather and water conditions where perfect on Sunday. This was the last of this years Esplanade Water Ski Race Series. Unfortunately the early high tide meant for an early start, 7.00AM to early for a Sunday.

The first of the men’s race was won by Wayne Mawer Skiing behind Anthony Capitanio’s Twin Turbo Charged Juggernaut. Unfortunately the boat had problems in the ladies race and was unable to compete in the last of the men’s race.

Dimitri was the eventual winner of the last race of the day skiing behind Stealth. Dimitri also raced in the B Grade men’s and won this behind Unsociable.

Dimitri is seen here with Jason Bennett (left) and Mat Duce (right) and their 8lt Cyclone Stealth (built in Cairns).

Dimitri has been working on improving his technique as well as his stamina while in Cairns He said that there is no better place to train, you ski to the reef catch a coral trout and water ski home.

The next race meeting is set down for the 5th of April.
