The start of the 61st Catalina was a challenge for all the smaller boats to get out the breakwater into the open sea. Some skiers fell which caused a delay to the start of the bigger boats, which started 9 minutes later.
First to the island was skier Sam Frey behind a 21ft inboard in the open men’s division , followed by Marc Avella in the Formula 2 outboard division arriving second on the island followed neck on neck by skier Roy Frey (f2). (see video : www.ecatalina.com/ski-race-2009-video.html
The conditions where quite rough and it was a very close race, but Marc managed to arrive first on the finishing line where the water flattened out which lead to a fast and exciting drag finish between Marc and Roy.
