6Southern 80th February 2013

The 2013 Club Marine Southern 80 is finally here! All the action will be happening at the finish line, located at Victoria Park Boat Ramp, Echuca. We have 599 entries this year, with the most entries into 60 mph Social, 60 mph Expert and Unlimited Inboard Expert. Boats and teams are coming from 416 towns across Vic, NSW, QLD and SA, to compete in the world’s biggest ski race event.

Friday will be the Coates Hire Breakfast with the Stars in Moama, where a massive range of race boats will be on display, teams are available to talk to the general public, along with some stars signing posters and a photo opportunity for the kids!! Then scrutineering and briefing will occur at the Moama Water Sports club rooms, Annesley Street Echuca.

Saturday Morning is the Total Tools Static Display in Hare St Echuca. A selection of boats will be on display for the public to view, along with some of the teams! A great morning out with the kids to show them the boats up close. Social classes will be competing during this time, with the Beechworth Bakeries Bakers Blitz and Presidents Dash following Saturday afternoon. Sunday’s racing will see the expert classes throughout the day. Entertainment will be provided both days at the Finish Line, including the Carlton Dry Chill Out Area, featuring 2 TV screens, a MotoX demonstration and The Aspen Parks Playground for the kids, which costs $10 per day. All spectators entering the Finish Line must pay an entry fee of $20 per day, $30 for a weekend pass, children under 13 free. Please no BYO, glass, or Dogs.

Superclass is the main event, where the big boats will be trying their hardest to break the record and get their skiers over the finish line in the quickest time possible. Teams entered into Superclass race on Saturday afternoon to find out their position starting time for Sunday’s racing.  Teams who have entered include Hellrazor, 99 Psycho Clowns, Argo, Blazen, Elm Street, Gassa, Hellbent, Sapphire, Merc Force, Superman, The Sealord Mistress, The Syndicate,  and Top Gun.

Be sure to visit the merchandise tent at the Finish Line for all this years’ Southern 80 Official Merchandise, in the same area as the food and drink vans, and many other trade sites to keep everyone occupied and busy throughout the weekend’s events.

Keep an eye on the racing and the big screens at the finish line, where footage of helicopters following boats can be viewed. This year we have many local competitors entered, so stay tuned by the program or the Southern 80 App for their starting times. A kids page is in the back of the program – make sure the kids enter the competition to win some really cool prizes! Race predictions are also listed in the program for each class event, another reason to watch for the boats – see how well the predictions match up to the results!

We wish goodluck and safe racing to all competitors, and expect all spectators to enjoy the racing and to head “Swim on Race Day No Way”.

Results and updates from the weekend will be “twittered” on the Southern 80 Twitter page http://twitter.com/southern80 as boats cross the line.  Full final results will be available from the Southern 80 web page at the conclusion of presentations. The Southern 80 App is now available from
