Needing a win to keep their championship hopes alive, Peter Procter and the team aboard Tru Blue have taken their first win of the Nautilus Marine Ski Racing Championship.

Race 3 featured tight battles throughout the field as some of the world’s finest ski racers put on a show in Geelong.

Despite being one of the championship favourites, Procter sat in ninth place after the two races at Round 1 in Queensland – a mechanical problem in Race 2 spoiling his weekend there.

However, the Sydneysider teamed with Mark Cranny (driver) and Damien Matthews (observer) to take Tru Blue’s first win of the series and reduce their gap to points leader Wayne Mawer.

Mawer and his 99 Psycho Clowns team were unable to capitalise on their pole position, getting away tardily amid confusion at the start.

The two-time World Champion, driver Daniel McMahon and observer Ian Baker dropped as low as seventh on the opening lap and spent the rest of the race working their way through the field.

After fending off Burnin and Superman in a three-wide battle mid-race, “The Clow

Rigg and Mark Weaver (behind Noel Griffin Racing’s boat Burnin) entered the last lap neck-and-neck, with Rigg on the inside and Weaver on the outside. RCM Racing got a huge run out of Turn 2 as the boats headed down the long, kinked front stretch and blasted down the outside to take third.

Behind Weaver, Jake Tegart took fifth with Merc Force, while Grant Turner and Blazen encountered trouble at the start (classified ninth), and Daniel Graziano behind Superman had problems on the last lap when racing with RCM and Burnin.

The victory rockets Peter Procter and Tru Blue from ninth to fifth in the championship standings at the halfway mark. However, Wayne Mawer and the 99 Psycho Clowns Racing team have doubled their championship lead, now leading by 16 points over Daniel Graziano and Mark Weaver in a tie for second.

Teams will return to the water off Geelong for Race 4 tomorrow, before the final round in Newcastle in January.
