Racer Of The Fortnight – Jake Frame

Great Britain’s Junior skier 17yr old Jake Frame sits in the hot seat for this edition of Racer Of The Fortnight.  Jake is busy preparing for the World Championships in Australia

What ski club do you belong to/at what age did you start to ski?

I ski for Allhallows Ski Club in Rochester Kent , where my parents and brother Alfie are also members. I first started to ski when I was 6 years old. I learned to ski behind a Jet Ski, I did my first race when I was 7 years of age which was the Hunstanton National and I needed the help of Karl Brooks who was holding me in the water at the start line and kept having to swim to me every time I fell off, I think he was more knackered than I was.

Who are your team/what class do you ski?

My team consists of my grandad Barry Frame who is my driver and my dad Simon Faulkner who is my observer. This 2011 season however will see me with a new driver Martin Mclaughlin for the European races and the World Titles in Australia , I ski in the Junior Category, and this will be my last year as a Junior.

What equipment do you use/how do you prepare for a race

I race behind a 21 ft Cyclone Invader with 2 x 2.5 EFI Mercury engines, I ski on a Maherajah Long Board with DC Bindings and I use a Wing custom made wetsuit. I have had a lot of support from a company called G.P.S MOT Testing who are based in South London, which has been a great help. I will be using the new 21ft Inboard Cyclone Intruder for European races and hopefully the World Titles. To prepare for racing over the winter, I train in the gym, running, circuit classes 3-4 times a week to keep my fitness levels at a high. We usually aim to get back on the water by the middle of March. On a race day I try and keep my self as relaxed. My best venue so far has to Arcos de la Frontera in Spain for the European Championships, it had some amazing views and variable challenging water conditions.

What is your best achievement

My Best achievement by far was winning the Viersel Diamond Race 2 years in a row as a Euro Kid, as I feel it is the most grueling race that anybody could ever be involved in.

Who are your skiing peers

I actually have quite a few. When I was growing up my idol was and still is Darren Kirkland as he was the best (he is in fact my trainer). When I got a little bit older I used to go out skiing with Karl Brooks (the legend), now as I have grown up the speeds have got faster and my peers now are Todd Haig and Wayne Mawer

What is your goal for 2011

My main goal for 2011 is to be selected to represent Great Britain as a Junior Boy in the World Titles to be held in Moreton Bay Australia. My second target is to ski the Catalina water ski race for the first time ever, as a junior boy just need a glimmer of hope to find and secure a boat. Last achievement is to be British Junior Champion second year running.
