It is 50 years since the first running of a ski race on the Murray River in 2015. The original event has led to what we now know as the Southern 80. The 2015 Club Marine Southern 80 is to take in on February 6th, 7th & 8th. There are some exciting changes in place for next year’s event.
Saturday’s racing will involve a tribute to the many legends of our sport of water ski racing and specifically the Southern 80 Ski Race. The details are yet to be finalised but we will be posting information as it becomes available on our website www.southern80.com.au or our Facebook page www.facebook.com/southern80
As part of our displays highlighting the 50 years since ski racing took place on the Murray River in Echuca / Moama, we are looking for any memorabilia from ski racing and the event over the past 50 years. If you have something that you believe is worth sharing before and during next year’s event, please contact our secretary Betty McCoomb on 03 54806754 or via secretary@southern80.com.au We will be looking to borrow the memorabilia from late December 2014 to Late February 2015.
To coincide with the 2015 event there are some new changes to the format of the racing over the weekend. All of the Saturday’s racing will start from 5 mile reserve in Moama and head to the finish line at Victoria Park. The logistics and manpower required to provide two start lines with the number of competitors wishing to compete in the Saturday events has stretched the Moama Water Sports Club resources over the past couple of years. Hence the decision has been made to have all the events on Saturday start at the one venue – 5 mile reserve Moama. The classes and start order for the Saturday events include:

- 5.2 & 6 Litre Social
- SMOC Social
- Stock 6 Litre Social
- Open Women’s Social
- 200HP Social
- Junior Social
- Sub Junior Social
- 70 mph Social
- 60 mph Social
- Disabled
- Tadpoles
- Beechworth Bakeries Bakers Blitz – to start around 1.30pm
- Presidents Dash
- Veterans
- Senior Social
Sunday Racing will be the same as in previous years with the addition of a new class called Super Social. This will be one class for all those social skiers wishing to compete in the full course of the event. This will be first class away on the Sunday. Sunday racing will run the full course of the Southern 80 from Torrumbarry to Echuca.
Details are still being finalised and we will notify via our website and Facebook as they are implemented. Entry forms for the 2015 Club Marine Southern 80 will be available from our website December 2014, closing on Wednesday 31st December 2014.
