NZ Bridge to Bridge Water Ski Classic – 27/28 Oct

Rollo’s Marine Yamaha Outboards Bridge to Bridge Water Ski Classic (www.nz.skirace.net) – the premier water ski event in the country will be held on the 27th and 28th of October. (Weekend after Labour Weekend).

b2b.JPGThe Bridge to Bridge Water Ski Classic is a great opportunity for all water sport enthusiasts to ski, wakeboard or wake skate the famous Waikato River, in the family or social class or to power it out in the powerboat sprints, thunder cat or jet ski dash. Alternatively play your hand at the Poker Run.

For the seasoned competitors and Ski racers
The feature race that runs from Cambridge to Taupiri and then back to Hamilton is a great challenge. Going high speeds through the ‘Narrows’ and the swirly currents eddies in the Waikato River make this 82km flat out sprint very interesting. The ‘War Lord’ Team of Rotorua will be looking to take out another Long Race title; however they may not have it all their own way this year. There are rumours of other Open Class boats out of New Zealand and Australia that will make things very interesting. What we do know is that Australian Superclass boat, ‘Noizworks’ , a 21 Ft Connolly with a Twin Turbo 496 Chevrolet is confirmed for this years race , this will mean some very competitive and fast racing (speeds exceeding 100mph (160KPH ).

Gary Dutton, Company Director of Rollo’s Marine says, our continued involvement in the Bridge to Bridge water-ski classic is driven by the desire to encourage participation in all kinds of water sports and by the pure passion – what better way to do this than on the mighty Waikato, and a great way to promote Hamilton as a destination.

The Bridge to Bridge Water Ski Classic follows on from the very successful NZ Community Trust World Water Ski Racing Championships held in Rotorua and Taupo in May of this year, where NZ secured the World Junior Championship title and 3 other skiers gained medal throughout the competition. This raised the profile of the sport of water ski racing in New Zealand, has ski racers even more excited about their sport and even enticed older skiers back out of retirement

We encourage all boat owners to get involved with the event as there is something for everyone. Get your boats & teams ready. Entry details can be found at www.nz.skirace.net

Apart from the main event – the Long Race on Sunday for the Ski Racing elite, there is

Family & Social Class Event
which is a 20km ski on an ordinary slalom ski/wake board/wake skate and handle from Ngaruawahia to Hamilton. This is a race that is long enough to be challenging, but short enough for everyone to give it a go. Any type of boat can be used for this event with a range of classes.

The Poker Run
an event that can be enjoyed by any boat owner. A fun cruise up the river from Ngaruawahia to Hamilton with stops along the way to collect cards which at the end you submit as a poker hand. This is not a race as the last boat to the finish line could end taking the cash prize away.

Powerboat Sprints, Thundercats and Jetskis
The reintroduction of the Jet skiers and Thundercat competitors in 2006 was great and we would really love to see as many of them as we can with their mates in 2007. We would also like to see as many the powerboaters, offshore, circuit, jet boats, tunnel boats etc, etc to come and compete in the Powerboat Sprints that take place from Hamilton to Ngaruawahia and return on the Saturday of the event. The more the merrier in this field and again there will be some very fast and competitive racing.

About Water Ski Racing in New Zealand: The New Zealand Water Ski Racing Association is a small but dedicated club that organises and competes in a highly entertaining and extreme sport. The NZWSRA has events all over the North Island that teams come from all over New Zealand and Australia to compete in. Ski Racing is so much more than recreational water skiing and requires endurance, fitness and a lot of mental toughness.
