Wade on Worlds Round 3

Posted by on 20 Sep 2011 in 2011 Worlds, Race Day 3, World Championship news | 0 comments

Worlds Race #3 The Sunrise on Day three of the 17th World titles, revealed a course of dead flat water and no wind at all, in direct contrast to the conditions that heralded the start of the World Championships. The ‘Dolphin Discouraging’ boats were out nice and early once again, doing their figure 8 drive-bys and this looked like the answer to the hold-ups of Day #1. The Open Women and Formula 2 Women were first up, and as they lined up along their start grids, there was a huge crowd gathering at both ends of the foreshore. This race was to be run on a different course to the previous two days, with the starts visible to all spectators, as well as the racing to be run almost parallel with the foreshore. It was definitely better for spectators, as they could now see how hard the skiers and boats were working in the races, instead of just during the end turn area. The Women all got away cleanly, bar Lori Dunsmore, who uncharacteristically missed her start. Like the champ that she is, she was up and racing in an incredibly quick time. Coming around for the first time,...

Wade on Worlds Round 2

Posted by on 12 Sep 2011 in Race Day 2 | 0 comments

Wade Bennett provides this full report of round two racing at Moreton Bay. Sunrise saw the arrival of Race number #2 of the 17th World Championships. It revealed a completely different wind and water combination, which was going to involve much more high speed racing. Organisers got into action right from day break, running boats over and along the whole course to encourage the wildlife to have breakfast elsewhere. This approach proved to be very successful and racing started on time. First to hit the water was the Open & F2 Women. All ladies had to follow up directly from Sunday’s racing, without any lay day break to recover optimally. All, but 3 left the start area at warp speed on the flatter conditions. Katelin Wendt, Adelaide Cox and Lauryn Eagle all got cracking starts in Open Women, while in the F2 class, there was a mass of boats in each wave, all of them flying.  The Aussie crews of Still Kid’n and Target Racing hit trouble at the very first turn buoy, with both spinning out, one by accident, one for safety’s sake. This meant that both Trudi Stout and the winner of F2 the previous day, Leanne Campbell,...

Wade Bennett provides this full report of round one racing at Moreton Bay. The Opening Ceremony and Welcoming to all competitors, sponsors and spectators, changed from its original route to the Settlement Cove Park Theatre, due to a heavy storm and was held in the VIP tents instead. All attending, were treated to speeches, music, athlete, judge & team introductions. Jack Houston, the current and defending Junior World Champion, took the athletes oath on behalf of all competitors. Fran Hynes, who is the Chief Judge, took the Judges oath. The event ended with IWWF Chairman Dusty Schulz announcing, ‘..I now declare the 17th World Waterski Racing Championships, open!’, to rapturous cheers and applause. All teams would have been checking out the conditions on the water, with all of the wind that accompanied the storm. The next couple of days are due to be a bit chilly in the morning, clearing to sunny skies. Saturday is going to be the windy day of the two, and will prove to be a great way for leading athletes to stamp their determination and authority on their respective classes. Blow out day one…. Back-up Plan Kept World Informed

Posted by on 11 Sep 2011 in Race Day 1 | 0 comments

Because Round 1 was cancelled on Saturday due to high winds, the professional camera crew were not available to attend the unscheduled day of racing on Sunday. With some quick work by Wade Bennett & Adam Bailey of SouthSide Promotions, a live feed was set up with the use of a laptop & free internet service (as no professional camera kit was available). It kept 100’s of viewers around the world updated with Dave Bishop & his team providing superb live commentary throughout the day. This is something that has never been provided at previous worlds but today’s affordable & easy to use technology now makes it possible for any water ski race event to be broadcast live across the world at almost no expense. However it still needs people to make it happen & former superclass racer Wade Bennett did just that – just hours after being released from hospital having undergone an operation. From Monday, the professional camera crew will be back on site and we can look forward to more superb live coverage from the 17th world water ski racing championships. A big thank you to all the people who are doing something to make this...

Australia makes Early Statement in Water Ski Racing Worlds Opener

Posted by on 11 Sep 2011 in Race Day 1 | 0 comments

SEPTEMBER 11: MEDIA RELEASE from race organsiers: The Australian World Waterski Racing Team have kicked off their 2011 campaign in dominant fashion, winning five of the six classes in today’s championship opener, off the shores of Pelican Park, near Redcliffe, Queensland. Severe winds yesterday meant a scheduled ‘lay day’ of the event, became the championship opener today. Conditions were perfect, with plenty of sunshine and challenging, yet manageable winds and ocean conditions. The first race of the day, was to be the women’s F1 and F2 classes- however in yet another twist sent by mother nature, dolphins on the 5km course paused racing for three hours. As tension built on the shores, with competitors itching to get started, it was an action pack beginning to the first Women’s lap, and controversial finish in the F1 class – however American Katelyn Wendt stayed clear of the drama, winning easily in front of compatriot Erin Saunders. With post protests and a subsequent jury meeting playing a part, it were kiwi Adelaide Cox, awarded with third place honors, in front of aussie favorite Lauryn Eagle. In the F2 Class, it was Leanne Campbell taking line honors, in front of Belgian Lena Feringa...

Temporary Live Feed Solution for Race Day 1

Posted by on 10 Sep 2011 in Race Day 1 | 0 comments

Those who logged on to the live feed before Round 1 was about to start will know that the quality was excellent, with sound and a chat facility for those watching to discuss things. Because Saturday’s Racing was cancelled, Round 1 will be held on Sunday (Aussie time). However the cameras & camera crews were not booked for Sunday and are not available to cover the event. As a last minute back-up plan, I’ve been chatting with Adam Bailey of Southside Promotions & Wade Bennett and hopefully we will have a solution that works well enough to broadcast the round 1 event. There will be an attempt to create a live feed via a free solution that’s available to anyone. It’s called Ustream and we will have to see how things go just before 8am Moreton Bay time on Sunday. Perhaps we will only get Dave Bishops commentary feed, but even that would be great. Wade has set up a channel for Sunday’s racing here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ski-racing-worlds and I’ve also embedded it below. You won’t see or hear anything until the broadcasting starts, just before racing. From Monday the camera crew will be back on site and the full video feed...

Waterski Racing Worlds race One Postponed 24 hrs Due to Dangerous Seas

Posted by on 10 Sep 2011 in Race Day 1 | 0 comments

SEPTEMBER 10 MEDIA RELEASE: In a difficult decision for event officials, race one of the 2011 World Waterski Racing Championships was postponed 24 hours today, with the Women’s F1 and F2 classes scheduled to start at 8:00am tomorrow. WIth strong winds and over 1.5 meter swells recorded at the far end of the course, officials, in conjunction with the Redcliffe Coast Guard agreed that the conditions would make the rescue of a fallen competitor too risky. With winds expected to die down gradually throughout the week, officials and race organisers have confirmed the original RACE ONE schedule, will be re run tomorrow morning, with the Junior competitors and men’s classes to follow respectively. Spectators are reminded that entry to Pelican Park is free, with limited parking available on site. A shuttle bus will also commence tomorrow, to transport additional visitors from free parking at the Redcliffe Showgrounds. Wayne Mawer: The Next Chapter by Jessica Greenwood

Posted by on 9 Sep 2011 in Australia | 0 comments

The article below was written for the 2011 World Championships programme In every athlete’s life, there comes a time of monumental decision making; a cross roads. There comes a time to decide what the future will hold; a time to be brave. For four-time World Champion, Wayne Mawer, that time came just two months before his 34th birthday. It was October 2008 and the skier was settled back into life in his hometown of Cairns in Far North Queensland, Australia. After an incredible career of competitive Water Ski Racing and Wakeboarding, Wayne was finally retired and free for the first time in 12 years to enjoy some sort of relative normality – the kind that only an athlete would appreciate or understand. He was running his own small business, married to his wife, Natalie and together the pair was enjoying life with their young son, Sunny. At the time Wayne’s career accolades already included the 1997 IWSF World Water Ski Racing Championship, the 2001 IWSF Pro Wakeboard World Championship and the 2005 the World Wakeboarding Association World Championship – that’s a World Title every four years of his life from the age of 21. So when is it time...

For a major race I would always make sure I give myself time to prepare,(fitness) & then a couple days before I would start to carbo load & start to hydrate, then on the morning make sure I have a good breakfast and keep well hydrate. What classes do you like to compete in most? I like competing in the open classes Which race venues do you enjoy racing at the most and why? Ski Racing Australia, be proud. Fundraiser for Misty raises more than double the original target !

Posted by on 2 Sep 2011 in Australia | 0 comments

Special mention must go to the huge amount of support shown over the weekend and indeed the previous 3 weeks, for sick Hawkesbury region 3 year old, Misty Colwill, who is bravely fighting Cancer. Kevin Boylan, Lumpy and Wade Bennett, joined forces and raised a small fortune to help the family get through this hard battle and to let them know that they are not alone. Thanks to your generosity and goodwill, we managed to not only hit the original $5000 target, but more than double it, with over $10,600 raised ! Along with presenting Misty’s Dad with the huge donation, at the Hawkesbury 120, to go towards her Chemotherapy and the bills that come with that, the crowd were then treated to watch both Dave Coldy and Darren Osmotherly have their heads shaved as people bid for further action from the guys. Kevin Boylan said ‘Thank you very much to everybody who contributed to Misty’s fundraiser. We would like to finalise everything by this Friday, cheque’s are accepted, made payable to Misty Colwill and can be posted to me 257 Tizzana Road, Ebenezer 2756 If you require any further information please call me on 0409367251 or 45799304. Superman dominates at the Mercury Marine H120

Posted by on 29 Aug 2011 in Australia, Various Articles | 0 comments

In idyllic Sydney weather, the Mercury Marine Hawkesbury 120 water ski race, has been run and won, in a spectacular and dominant display. Darren McGuire’s big black Force, Superman, dominated the race on both days, taking out the Sackville Sprint for pole positions on Saturday, as well as the main race on the Sunday, towing Superstar Daniel Graziano and last year’s outright winner Daniel Campbell. Second on both days, nipping at the heels of Superman, was Darren Stewart and the crew of Agitator, racing in the Unlimited Inboard Class. Birthday boy Kris Knights, partnered by Justin Cadden, really had the ever reliable Superclass boat screaming up the river. Third place went to the Robertson family crew in Firebird, with Steven and Paul on the skis out the back and Barry & John really making the big Nordic hull get up and boogie on their home water. Leo Welch, proud owner of the brand new Mistress, did a great job in making it home 4th Outright, while putting the boat to it’s first test in a major river race. He said that he had a great time in a straight line, trimming the boat out and sitting it on it’s...

Name: Emma Duckworth What team? Team V-Maximize Where are you from? Auckland, New Zealand Occupation: Clinical Research Manager What class do you compete in? I observe in F2 Mens, Open Mens, Masters, SMOC and Sub-Juniors What titles / championships do you have under your belt? Various NZ and Trans-Tasman age group titles as a skier. That’s going back a few years now though! As an observer, have picked up most NZ titles, including mens open a few times. I also have three 3rd place race medals at Worlds – one for the 4th race in 2003 in Junior Boys and then for races 2 and 4 at the 2007 Worlds in Mens F2. Those were particularly special being the only medals NZ has ever gained outside of Juniors. What is a memorable moment, ski racing, that you would like to share? The first race start at the 2007 World Champs in NZ that I was co-chair of the organising committee. It was pretty special bringing all those boats and competitors to NZ. Although standing on the podium for our two 3rd placings in Men’s F2 races came pretty close. Biggest influence on your ski racing career? Quent Swayn and...

Aussie Ski Racers show how to dig deep for Misty. 1 week left until the H120 to donate !

Posted by on 19 Aug 2011 in Australia, Miscellaneous, Uncategorized | 0 comments

We have started to help a very sick little 3 year old girl called Misty, in the Hawkesbury Region, who has Cancer, but to do even more we need your help ! … By next weekend’s Hawkesbury 120. As we all know, this is a very long, expensive fight for life and Misty’s Family are looking down the barrel of losing their Family home. Our very own Ski Racing NSW practical joker, Dave Coldy, originally offered to fore-go his flowing locks at the Mercury Marine H120 ski race, but only at a price! He wouldn’t do it for less than $5000 ! Guess what ?!.. The warm hearted generosity of Ski Racers, has so far raised $8070 !! We now ask your help to hit the magic $10,000 number and double, (or even triple ??) our original target, before the H120, in a week’s time ! Please continue to help show that we aren’t just people that race up and down the River, we care about our community as well. If you can help this happen, please call Kevin Boylan on M: 0409 367 251 H: 4579 9304 or email lumpy@hawkesburyradio.com.au and lets see Misty and her Family’s lives...

GB – Folkestone Race Cancelled

Posted by on 28 Jul 2011 in Great Britain | 0 comments

The UK has been battered by extreme weather over the past few months, resulting in National races having to be cancelled. British F2 Driver Nigel Newland  met a year ago with local authorities &   a private individual who was prepared to fund a race at Folkestone . Unfortunately the weather dictated the race weekend with the racing being cancelled. Nigel Newland FOLKESTONE RACE Thank you to everyone who turned up last weekend. Unfortunately yet again the weather spoilt the occasion. I was hoping that we could still run with cover from the harbour wall, but with 30-35mph winds and seas so large it was not possible. Everyone I dealt with in Folkestone was extremely helpful and willing which I find quite refreshing in this day and age. I would welcome your comments and views on the venue good and bad, to assess considering going there again. Expenses for hosting the race were all covered by a private individual and I understand he is keen to promote and finance Folkestone to a National and even European level should we be willing. Thank you Nigel Newland Racing Commitee British Water Ski  & Wakeboard               ...

Vote here for Wakeboarding to be one of the Sports @ the 2020 Olympic Games

Posted by on 26 Jul 2011 in Australia, Canada, Europe, IWWF news, Miscellaneous, New Zealand, Uncategorized, USA | 0 comments

Click here to vote ! Which sport will join the Olympic Games programme? With the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently announcing its shortlist of sports vying for inclusion in the 2020 Summer Olympics, SportsPro is asking its readers, which one of the eight contenders will be added to the programme for the 32nd Olympiad? Baseball While baseball still remains as popular as ever in America, the IOC clearly deemed it to have less appeal on the world stage when, in 2005, it announced that baseball, like softball, would make its final appearance at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Despite making the latest shortlist, the sport is unlikely to be chosen so soon after being excluded, but will the IOC be convinced enough by the new bid to perform an uncharacteristic about-turn? Softball Softball’s high proportion of female participants may be its advantage over other sports in the list, mainly because the IOC is looking to increase female involvement in the Games. In fact, while the IOC noted the sport’s lack of global appeal for its exclusion from the programme, many were shocked by its decision, considering its well-publicised commitment to gender equality. Though softball has the support of Australian...

Posted by on 18 Jul 2011 in Australia, Racer of the Fortnight, Skier Racer Articles | 0 comments

Aussie Ski Racer, Jack Houston, took some time out of his busy training schedule, to sit in the Racer of the Fortnight hot seat and answer some questions about his stellar career so far and what’s next for the current, defending, Junior Boys World Champion. What team are you from / do you ski with ? Team Stinga Racing / Tuff-e-Nuff When did you start ski racing ? When I was 8 in 2002 Where are you from ? I am from Wilberforce, Sydney, NSW. Do you get much on water training there ? Only about once a week. Botany Bay is where I do most of my on water training How do you prepare for each race? Catalina Live Feed Cancelled

Posted by on 13 Jul 2011 in -Catalina 2011 | 0 comments

13 July Update: River Dave has confirmed (on riverdavesplace.com) the unfortunate cancellation of the planned live feed for Catalina 2011 and writes … “We have everything set in motion, and this Carmageddon deal with the 405 freeway happened. Long story short we have everything in place and ready to go, but we can not get a frequency from the FCC to broadcast from the Helicopters back to the Hotels. No frequency = no live feed. It was suggested that we record the race and broadcast it, but again with no frequency, the announcers can’t see the race for the audio etc.. I would like to say, this isn’t one of those we threw in the towel deals. SpotonDL has fought, clawed, bribed, borrowed, and begged to try and make this happen. A frequency is never impossible to come by, but with this news deal, every news agency in town is here, and the LAPD took the rest of the frequencies.. We even went so far as to talking to main guy at the FCC for the west coast, and tried to run it in a 2 hour window to no avail. It is completely out of our hands at...

Start Wrapped or Unwrapped

Posted by on 10 Jul 2011 in Racing tips | Comments Off on Start Wrapped or Unwrapped

Danny Cropper of DC Waterskis writes; when you start a race it is very important that you are doing what you feel comfortable with. Because the less you need to think about in the starting area, the easier and smoother this part of the race will run. For instance the unwrapped start has been used for many years and is preferred by less people these days. Starting unwrapped is all that some people use because they ski race with their handles in front of them. But the preferred staring method these days is the wrapped start. This is where you jump in the water and put the handles behind your back and hold on with one hand behind and one hand in front of your body. this start method eliminates having to have to wrap up when you get up and going, basically you are ready to go as soon as you get up, out of the water. One last thing that people forget, because getting up wrapped is so much easier, is that you should still bend your legs right up into your chest when getting up, to make it easier on the boat, you and your rope....

Racer Of The Fortnight – Jake Frame

Posted by on 4 Jul 2011 in Racer of the Fortnight | 0 comments

Great Britain’s Junior skier 17yr old Jake Frame sits in the hot seat for this edition of Racer Of The Fortnight.  Jake is busy preparing for the World Championships in Australia What ski club do you belong to/at what age did you start to ski? I ski for Allhallows Ski Club in Rochester Kent , where my parents and brother Alfie are also members. I first started to ski when I was 6 years old. I learned to ski behind a Jet Ski, I did my first race when I was 7 years of age which was the Hunstanton National and I needed the help of Karl Brooks who was holding me in the water at the start line and kept having to swim to me every time I fell off, I think he was more knackered than I was. Who are your team/what class do you ski? My team consists of my grandad Barry Frame who is my driver and my dad Simon Faulkner who is my observer. This 2011 season however will see me with a new driver Martin Mclaughlin for the European races and the World Titles in Australia , I ski in the Junior Category, and this will...

10 Things to do when Racing

Posted by on 3 Jul 2011 in Racing tips | Comments Off on 10 Things to do when Racing

Danny Cropper of DC Waterskis writes; here are 10 things to do when racing: 1. DON’T walk up to a new crew and say “just go flat out, I’ll be right!” 2. Eat and drink before a race. 3. Stretch or warm up and cool down before and after racing. 4. DON’T think about other things, other than skiing. 5. DON’T get your capabilities mixed up with your ambitions. 6. Concentrate on skiing not other boats, its the observers job. 7. Bend your legs, it makes rough water heaps easier. 8. Adjust your rope according to the race and conditions. 9. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. 10. Enjoy yourself. Ski racing is fun and rewarding. Danny Cropper – DC...
